When do companies use interim managers?

Companies turn to interim managers when they need to drive change — often when the stakes are high.

This can include:

  • Turnaround or crisis situations, where decisive action and experience are critical
  • Growth and expansion, where organisations need leadership to scale fast
  • Gap management, when a key leader leaves and a strong interim is needed until a permanent solution is in place

Interim managers bring an objective perspective, deep experience, and a strong results focus. They act fast, deliver quality, and often create more value — at a lower cost — than traditional management consultants.

How long do interim assignments typically last?

Assignments usually range from 6 to 9 months, with the possibility of extension if both the client and interim manager agree.
Some projects are shorter — lasting just a few weeks — while others extend beyond 12 months.

The average duration is currently around eight months and increasing as assignments grow in complexity.

How does the process work when I apply to join?

When you submit your CV or professional profile to Nextt & Mason:

  1. You’ll receive a short questionnaire to complete — covering your background, experience, and preferred types of assignments.
  2. Our team reviews your CV and responses to determine if your profile fits our leadership network.
  3. If accepted, you become part of our exclusive network of pre-qualified interim leaders.

We will contact you when suitable assignments arise that match your skills, experience, and availability.

How should I structure my CV or professional profile?

Your CV should be clear, concise, and results-focused — ideally no more than three pages. We recommend highlighting:

  • Your key leadership positions and results from the past 5 years
  • Assignments or projects involving transformation, turnaround, or change management
  • Specific responsibilities and achievements that demonstrate measurable impact

Personal details, hobbies, or family background are less relevant — focus instead on leadership, execution, and outcomes.

What happens when Nextt & Mason receives a new client assignment?

When a new interim role becomes available, we send a brief to our closed network of pre-qualified interim managers. The email includes key facts, scope, and basic conditions.

You can then indicate your interest and availability.Based on responses — often at short notice — we select a small group of suitable candidates for a confidential meeting.During the meeting, we review the company context, assignment details, and expectations.

Nextt & Mason typically presents two to three top candidates to the client. The client usually makes a decision immediately after the interviews, and you will know shortly thereafter if you are selected.

How are assignments matched and offered?

We match assignments based on:

  • Leadership experience and functional expertise
  • Industry background and cultural fit
  • Availability and timing

If your profile matches a client need, we brief you directly. After confirming your interest, we present your profile to the client. When the client selects you, we finalise terms and ensure a fast start.
